Thodoris Lalos
V for Vivlio

The artists’ books created by Theodore Lalos are remarkable for their diversity, ingenuity and novelty. They comprise a unique library, compiling a body of figurative and literary references, “narrating” stories of personal and collective experience — stories that are unanticipated, suggestive and ambivalent, reflecting the unique mode of communicationof their creator, his association and vital relationship with reality. His interventions on the opened book pages and covers, the convergence of painting, photography, collage, objects and ready-mades, combined with the meticulous, “constructivist” structure of his materials and images, decisively contribute to the aesthetic outcome. With their unconventional spirit, unique sensitivity and more-or-less evident symbolic allusions, his books focus on the human condition, on the concepts of memory and history, life and time, while simultaneously suggesting an alternative and highly interesting perception of the world, its contradictions and entrapments, its certainties and reversals. Lalos does not achieve this descriptively or narratively, but through his artistic writing, which captures the deeper essence of things, the truth and expressive power of genuine artistic creation. Books are not just the primary “materials” of this unit of work, but also “declare” the omnipotence of knowledge, its power to awaken and mobilise, transform and liberate, to engender consciousness, resistance and rebellion at a time of deep crisis and transition.
